Blocky is a modern fabula for children. Like all fairy tales it is a highly condensed morality play. The action is centred around a single, central character, Blocky, who represents every one of us. Blocky is not an individual with a unique psychological profile. Instead we meet a character who acts out the predicaments we all have to face in our lives.
Blocky is not a complex character, this deliberate simplicity is the machine which generates the interactions between the reader and the story. We want to identify with Blocky immediately. There's not enough psychological material to prevent anyone making the equation between themself and Blocky. We aren't forced away by the simplicity of the character, nor by any of the cultural or social or racial markers like facial features, hair colour, skin colour or gender.
Blocky isn't good nor bad, perhaps that is the trap. We can't identify with Blocky to suit our whims, e.g., we can't like to be bad or to be good, because Blocky has no moral constitution. Blocky is there to be judged and so the judgement will fall on the heads of everyone who identifies with Blocky.
